FIRST. Change the needle. Many people don't bother until it breaks... but a small burr, or even just a dull needle can make a huge mess. It can make your tension seem wrong, and even contribute to bobbin nests.
Also, consider changing the thread. Some machines do not like some threads - had a Pfaff that hated Coats & Clark but sewed fine with Gutterman.

First make sure the bobbin case is free of any lint or thread pieces and then make sure you have the bobbin in correctly. It should pull off the top to the left and then go through a series of slots. You can look in your manual to be sure you have it right. The other thing is to make sure you hold on to your top and bottom thread (pull them to the back) each time you start sewing. This keeps the bobbin thread from backtracking and tangling itself.

When this happens to me, it is because the bobbin thread has slipped out of the case. Put the bobbin into the metal case so that the thread is tailing off into your left hand. Make sure you get it all the way down into the little slot. Whenever you change a bobbin, swish a dry paintbrush around the inside of the little case and that whole area of the machine before you pop it back into place.

#1 I would check my bobbin and make sure that it is wound right and then put it back in and then re thread the machine. A bobbin that is not wound right can cause a lot of problems. If this is the case take it in for a check up. Good luck

assuming the bobbin case is threaded correctly, and the starter thread is behind the work, then the tension needs adjusting.
refer to your owner's manual. there should be a little numbered knob on the front of the machine. you don't want to mess with it too much if you don't know what you're doing.
even better, take it to a shop for adjusting.

Sounds like your bobbin tension is too tight. Try to loosen it a little at a time until you get even stitches like on the top.
Hope this helps out.
