Tony Meola. He stood out amongst a team of amatuers in 1990, and about single-handedly got the US into the World Cup in 1990, and the US has been a team to take seriously ever since. Give Meola a good deal of credit for this.
I never saw Joe Gaetjens play, so I can't say he is the greatest, but I'll always revere him because he scored against the hoity-toity Limeys in 1950!

yes that was against England in their greatest world cup win but he is Haitian and only played for the US as a mercenary
Bert Patenaude , has more of a claim to that
he scored a hattrick for the US in the 1930 world cup, (disputed at the time but eventually proven)
and a phenomenal 114 goals in 158 game in the american soccer league. he is a pioneer for the US game and contributed alot more that Getjens to the development of the game, historically wise

Brian McBride is Captain America, not Claudio Reyna. He played in the MLS, played in multiple World Cups, and is a captain, MVP, and leading scorer for Fulham in the EPL.
