1) A wallpaper border 30 feet in length is to be installed along the top of 3 walls of a rectangular kitchen. (One length of the kitchen has cabinets and doesn't need wallpaper.) If the lenght of the kitchen is 6 feet less than twice the weidth, what are the dimensions of the room?

I tried doing something like W(112-L)=L-7 but what I'm trying isn't working. Thanks for your help!!

I don't see where you got your numbers.
Let w represent the width.
Therefore the length is: 2w - 6
The border will be: 2w + 2w - 6 = 30
Simplify by gathering terms:
4w = 30 + 6 = 36
So: width = 9 feet & length will be 12 feet.

enable L be the dimensions of the rectangle and W be the width. L = 6 + W Double the dimensions and width and multiply them jointly to get the section. 2L * 2W = 108 4LW = 108 replace L with the 1st equation and additionally you have: 4(6+W)W = 108 remedy for W: 24W + 4W^2 = 108 4W^2 + 24W - 108 = 0 factoring out a 4, you have: 4 ( W^2 + 6W - 27) = 0 or 4 (W+9) (W-3) = 0 W = 3 or -9 on account that width can not be damaging, your unique width is 3. Now remedy for L making use of the unique equation L = 6 + W L = 6 + 3 L = 9 Your unique dimensions are L = 9 and W = 3
