My left foot completely twisted in under all my body weight when I fell to the ground...It happened on Thursday morning while I walked my dog....now it is Monday night...It is still swollen and sore to the touch..if pressed on with fingers it can hurt....I'm still limping.... It is swollen on both sides of the ankle but more on the latteral side....... What could be the problem??? Is it more than just a bad sprain? How long should i wait until I get an Xray? I don't have health insurance and I aint rich....so don't say I should just go out and spend every last dime I have on some Xrays...

Sprained ankles take awhile. I haven't sprained mine in a long time but it used to be a once every other month thing for me in my teenage years.

Depending on the sprain your ankle may never feel the same again. My right ankle hasn't felt as strong since I jumped off four steps and landed on it about ten years ago. Sometimes it even randomly gives out. I haven't fallen because of this yet, but I expect to sometime in the future.

But in any case, this info comes from wikipedia...

"Although some signs and symptoms can be used to assess the severity of a sprain, the most definitive method is with the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Sprains are graded in four degrees.

The first degree is only a minor tear or stretch of a ligament.

The second degree is a tear of a ligament, which is usually followed by pain or swelling.

The third degree is a complete rupture.

The fourth degree requires surgery to heal, and is most severe, and actually breaks the ligament, along with some small bones if severe enough."

I've found a great website talking about the ways to test for the various degrees of sprain and the treatments of them. http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?thread_id=152

You probably have a bad stage 1 and MAYBE a stage 2. Unless you are massive in weight just walking doesn't seem like it could cause worse than that.

It'll take awhile, that's for sure. I also found that wrapping my ankle seems to alliviate the pain some although it does lengthen heal time.

So you should hold off some more. Get an ankle wrap and wrap it.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Is there alot of bruising? Did you hear any sort of popping noise when your foot went underneath you? I did something like this and I managed to tear my muscles and stretch out my ligaments which is horribly worse then breaking the bone itself, and it needed an air cast. For right now, make sure to keep your foot and anke elevated about your heart to help with the swelling and alternate having ice on there, and then taking it off. If it's not better in a few more days you might have to go and have it checked out.

I have had many sprained ankles in my life. They hurt for a week or so.. sometimes longer. The thing to keep in mind though is if you cannot put any weight on it and it hurts continuously, it may be more than a strain or sprain.

Strains and sprains are soft tissue injuries (tendons and ligaments) that most doctors say now to continue to walk on. My first severe sprain in the 1980's the doctor had me walk on crutches for two weeks. More recently the doctors said support, ice, rest, elevation ( to keep swelling down) and walk when you can tolerate it. But if you go much longer and can't walk on it, you may be forced to have it looked at. Good Luck
