I just wanted to give two thumbs up for Izzy's answer. Incidentally, Georgina Howell has just written a biography entitled Gertrude Bell Queen of the Desert, Shaper of Nations, which was first published by Macmillian in the United Kingdom in 2006 and by Farrar, Strauss & Giroux in the United States in 2007.

Gertrude Bell. She was liaison to the British High Commissioner of Baghdad and actually helped draw the boundaries of he country itself. Ms. Bell was also a well known friend of King Faisal.
