My hubby really wants to name our son (if we have one some day!) Robert Paul, after family members (one of his grandfathers was Robert and the other Paul and my grand father was Robert and my dad's middle name is Paul). I like the name, but not too crazy over it, because to me, it just sounds old. What do you think?

I have so many relatives named Robert and it's my brother middle name and I LOVE it! If I have a son that I get to name I will most likely call him Robert. Don't worry about something being too old-fashioned. Do you know who brings names back into fashion? Nice people that people like. Names grow on you. The name Eugene would grow on al of us if some hunkie actor was called Eugene. You know it's true.
But Robert is a great name and I love the nickname Robbie

My 9 year old son is Robert, also named after family members (father, and two great-grandfathers). I love it! Definitely not too old fashioned. Trendy names you will always be able to put in a certain time period, and then they disappear. Classic names like Robert and Paul are timeless.

By the way, my son goes by Robert, or Rob. I did not let anyone call him Bobby, because although Bobby is cute, it gets shortened to the horrendous Bob when older.

Robert is a great name, and Rob is a fabulous nickname, but Robert Paul is a bit bland.

You could try to dress up Paul - Paulson, Paley, Pauley. But none of those thrill me.

I'd gracefully concede on the first name, but reserve the right to choose a more interesting middle name, of familial significance or not.

I think some of the very old names are coming back in style and it is also in style to be out of style.
Names like
Henry
Lillian
Robert could be used as is, or shortened to Rob or Bob or Bobby or Bert or Robbie etc.
If I named a boy Robert I would call him Robert. I like it.
Most important thing is for both of you to agree.

Robert Paul has a classic ring to it, plus the sentimental value of it. There are a LOT of ways to go. Rob and Bob and all that but also RP. or R and the last initial.

Nothing wrong with Robert. It will never go out of fashion. I am married to one!: )

We chose Robert as our eldest son's second middle name (Travis Benjamin Robert Christian). I don't give it much thought either way, but it was a nice way to honour both of his grandfather's and one uncle. Christian is my stepfather's middle name and I wouldn't budge on the first two... but all four of my children have a middle name that honours someone in the family (the girl's have two, the boys three) LOL

Your son would probably end up nicknamed "Rob" or "Robbie"... I know a lot of people named Robert. It sounds fine to me, but very common.
