I think this is an interesting question! On my shower curtain it says Myanmar, yet when you type 'Burma' into Wikipedia it automatically comes up as Myanmar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma

In 1989, the name officially changed to the Union of Myanmar, I think by the ruling military (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Law_and_Order_Restoration_Council)

So I'm guessing everyone in the West uses Burma as a protest to them!!

Also, with ex-colonies, old habits die hard. It took a while for people to stop calling Zimbabwe Rhodesia. And a lot of people still call Mumbai Bombay.

I've been wondering about this. I think the military junta renamed it Myanmar so it is respectful to the people of Burma to call it Burma. I'm not sure about this, but I think Aung San Suu Kyi would call it Burma. I've been looking at Wiki to try and figure it out, but feel I'm missing something...

It's also true that few people would know what you were talking about if you talk about Myanmar!

None of the answerers has twigged what you're on about Mat O - except me, of course. This in the media and jounalism category! Idiots.
I make a point of calling it Burma, or The Dictatorship of Myanmar. Just yesterday, in Macau, I got talking to a bank guard, who proudly said he came from Burma. Same day the papers were full of the huge demonstrations by 1000s of Buddhist monks against the junta. The papers were Hong Kong papers of course - China is officially an ally of the "socialist government of Myanmar" and little Macau has no real English paper.

Because I and most other people remember that name and no where it is. Myannar is a name I have only just learned, but I will still call it Burma, because it rmakes me think of an essentially gentle people and not a cruel dictatorship

To be honest I think you may find it depends on the age of the newsreader as I have heard both. And bearing in mind they write their own scripts therefore they will use what in their mind is the most comfortable. Of course in these days of dumbing down we also need to be told everything clearly !

I have a copy of my grandfathers 1923 marriage certificate and it states he was married in Burma. So I think it is one of those places that will forever be referred to by both names.

Because if they say MYANMAR people would go "Where the heck is that?", but people are familiar with Burma.

A Burma is always a Burma.
Ever wonder who is the Boss of heaven and earth?
Ever wonder who"s been kicking the butts of God in doing things at own whims and fancy with " My way" getting kick on the butts as casualty of the dead Mummy in not worshiping God?

Old habits die hard, unfortunately. And old maps don't get thrown out quickly.

Sometimes people just don't remember the switch; it's not deliberate and I don't think there are any bad intentions.
