I'm feeling a little discouraged. As many of you may be aware, I've been trying to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at my school.

My school is very large with a decent sized LGBT community. I've taken the correct steps so far in creating the GSA and I have a lot of support from both the faculty and local LGBT organizations that I have contacted.

It's the students. I have a lot of support from them, but their are still a decent amount who are LGBT who are hesitant to be part of such an organization. They feel that it would make them more of a target and do more harm than good.

I disagree, I feel that we are already targets and by doing this we can stand together and support each other. We can also become more educated in dealing with discrimination and homophobia as well as make new friends.

Please share your support or offer ideas.

Thank you so much everyone. Very inspirational.

I really do hope that once this gets started that the hesitant people will see it working and want to be a part of it.

But as stated already, I can't force anyone. I can try and persuade, of course.

Thanks everyone, you all are the greatest.

And I think someone asked me a question as to where the school was? It's in South Carolina--yea, I know it'll be difficult in a rather conservative southern state, but I feel that there is never a better time than now to make a change!

i wouldn't dare target anyone, teens in the LGBT community deserve to be treated just like normal teens and should show their support, my school has a GSA and it has a pretty descent amount of members.
I think once you get it started, more will join as their confindence grows and as new students enter the school. I hope you get it started, it would be a great addition to the clubs.

Peace! You have to let people arrive at their own pace! If you push too hard you will push people away. The main focus at school should be school work and good grades. 10 years from now, what will be important is your education, and propelling yourself into a great career. Prioritize!! There are many opportunities to socialize in a mixed setting when you get into the "real world"!!

Change takes time...you are asking people to stand out to everyone their sexuality and their support of LGBT folk...for many that is a stretch...be patient with them...and yourself. good luck!

Well you can't force someone to do something they don't want. Hopefully if you start it, those who are reluctant, will come around after seeing the positive effects. Good luck with your fantastic endeavors. =]
