What is the meaning or significance of websites that end in .us as opposed to .com?

Just curious if there was any distinction or meaning to this.

.us is one of the "country codes". There is a "dot" code for most countries in the world. It is suppose to represent a web site that is hosted in the United States. (But as no one enforces the codes, it is no guarantee.)

Usually if someone is using a country code it is because the matching .com (.org and/or.net) were already in use.
