.us is one of the "country codes". There is a "dot" code for most countries in the world. It is suppose to represent a web site that is hosted in the United States. (But as no one enforces the codes, it is no guarantee.)

Usually if someone is using a country code it is because the matching .com (.org and/or.net) were already in use.
