One of the worst legal opinions, in my view, in the last fifty years. We all knew that the government could take land for public purposes (building roads, parks, etc.) via eminent domain, but NEVER for private development in order to increase a local tax base.

An obnoxious opinion and contrary to everything this government should stand for. If our government won't respect private property rights, there's little point in owning any.

does not count. The ultimate court docket suggested Eminent area became criminal. Sandra Day O'Connor dissented asserting it may pave the way for abuse. Which it did. there became a case in New Jersey the place a retired couple have been forced from their totally paid abode to clean the way for condominiums the couple could desire to by no ability locate the money for. the wealthy have been given richer on the retired couples fee. If New jersey can use a 0.5 assed reason to stress a coupe out of there abode any reason will do.

And it will continue as long as people on both the left and right, support it just because the government comes up with an excuse.
The government can come up with a myriad of excuses to do anything. Some people support those excuses, and the others are denounced as liberal traitors who have something to hide, for not supporting them.

Columbia University President, Lee Bollinger vs poor Americans

".....He has also been at the forefront of criticism for his role advocating the expansion of the University into the Manhattanville neighborhood and the possible use of eminent domain to help it seize property there. The Bollinger administration's expansion plans have been criticized as fundamentally incompatible with the 197/a plan for development crafted by the community, and for failing to address the neighborhood's need to maintain affordable housing stock......."

I've read the options of the Supreme Court Justices in this case and seems like the main explanation had to do with "The Greater Good."

I've read the options over and over (I am not a lawyer, so I may be missing a lot) trying to make sense of it. It's almost as if they are saying, we know it's unfair, but this will be better for the town in the long run.

It flabbergasts me every time I think about it. Property rights are one of the pillars of the "American Way."

Now I'm getting angry all over again.

Thanks.

Imminent domain? Shoot, a federal judge, a few years ago, said that the US does NOT have to respond to inquiries by it's citizens, which is guaranteed in the CONSTITUTION. If they don't have to follow the constitution on something like that, they don't have to tell us why they do anything. You do know they make us pay federal taxes when there is NOT a law that says we have to!

You sound like a very confused man who can't tell left from right, or communism from capitalism. Mugabe, in Africa is probably the best example of a land grabber and he is a right wing fascist lunatic.

There can be no private land under socialism. We will soon be serfs. That is what the high property taxes are about also. Kick the people off the land so the rich and the government can own it all. The end to the American dream.

You said it. They're from the left. They don't care about the hard working people of America. In fact, I've seen them take land and give to the people whom build those dead beat homes. I believe they call it, "Habitat For Humanity". Worse thing that could ever happen to the neighborhoods of America.
