I am planning a weekend trip to Philadelphia but I have never been. We want to eat, drink and stay in a nice safe area. Any recommendations? Also would like to be fairly close to historic sights.

Anywhere in or around center city is nice, stay away from the little "back street" places,Philly really is NOT the city of brotherly love! The hotels can tell you what historic sites are nearby and there's this tour bus called "The Duck" you should look into. Have fun and be safe!

I stayed at Courtyard by Marriot Downtown. Address is 21 North Juniper Street at City Hall.
It was a short walk to all the historic stuff but the area around the hotel wasn't desserted after museum hours are over. There seemed to be nice bars/restaurants close by. My BF & I loved the market on 13th street (just around the corner and a block away). We had lunch there every day of our visit.

Hilton Garden Inn is nice and in a great location near the Reading Terminal Market. Also the Doubletree, Sheraton Society Hill, Hyatt and Omni are nice and well located for sightseeing, dining and shopping.

Make sure you are in the downtown area. We were in Philly in Feb. 2006 and stayed near the airport. Make sure you don't stay there. It is a bad location. We had to taxi to everywhere we went and it was a 50.00 cab ride. We really liked the Hard Rock cafe.

We stayed in a nice Holiday Inn in the historic district a short walk from the Liberty Bell and walking distance of some nice restaurants. Here is the website. http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc/1/en/hotel/phlim?rpb=hotel&crUrl=/h/d/pc/1/en/hotelsearchresults

Whatever you do, do not ride the duck tour bus. It is so annoying and makes you look like a huge tourist. And if you do, don't quack at anyone.
