I would say it's minerals. Water and oxygen definitely limit the distribution of terrestrial life... I'm not sure about nitrigen though :)

Salinity (concentration of salt in the water) has a measurable effect on distribution - this can be seen in estuaries where the more salt-tolerant species will be found closer to the seaward edge of the estuary.

Oxygen.

There is a lower oxygen concentration farther down in the ocean.
