I am 47 yrs old and had a tubal ligation 10 years ago. Recently I had an ultrasound done because last month's period was longer than normal. The ultrasound technician and radiologist said that it looked like I had a gestational sac in my uterus but no baby. I took a blood pregnancy test and it came out negative. The ultrasound and blood test was done before I missed a period. Anyway, what I want to know is...is there something else that can resemble/mimic a gestational sac but isn't a sac? Like a cyst or tumor? Or might I indeed be pregnant but just tested to early? I am confused. I do go in for a appt. in October but I am losing sleep over wondering what is going on and if I may be a mom again!

Well, if you got the ultrasound before you even missed a period, there is a chance they misread what they saw. Usually, the gestational sac can be seen about 5 weeks into the pregnancy and in your case you would have been 4 to 4 1/2 weeks along making the scan results not as accurate.

I'm not sure what the sac could be mistaken for. On the ultrasound it is a sphere or oval shape and is located near the top of your uterus and is a dark area outlined in white or a lighter area.

In an ultrasound image, ovarian cysts resemble bubbles. The cyst contains only fluid and is surrounded by a very thin wall. So it would look different from the sac.

I would definitely test again in a few days or when your period is due. Get one of the ones that claims they can give you results before you even miss your period and make sure to do the test in the morning when the hormones are most concentrated in the urine.

It's quite possible that what the technicians saw may not be what they think it is. Yes they are trained but I always thought the technician and the radiologist weren't supposed to discuss results with you, the doctor needs to look at it and determine what they are seeing.

At 47, the strange periods could be the beginning of early menopause, or what they are seeing is some kind of tumor or cyst that is playing havoc with your cycle. Even if it is a tumor, the location means that it is easy to remove and if you are not planning on having children they can do a hysterectomy to ensure they remove the entire tumor. It's not something to panic about.

If you are pregnant, well stranger things have happened. My first husband was a change of life baby and my ex MIL had her tubes clamped. Very few forms of birth control are 100% and if you are meant to have another baby, enjoy it. If not - enjoy your freedom! But don't stress either way right now, it's not good for you and won't make any difference in the end. October isn't that far away, and if you are pregnant the home test will let you know before then.
