THis is the question: Conrad's Taxi Service charges $1.50 for the first mile and $.90 for each additional mile. How far can Mrs.Sheehan go for $20 if she gives the driver a $2 tip?

I have done some work on this but I sont know if im correct or solving it properly.

Steps:
1.) $20 - $2(tip) + $18
2.) $18 - $1.50 ( 1st mile) = $16.50
3.) $16.50/divided by $.90 =18 and 1/3 miles.
4.) 18 1/3 miles + that 1st mile that was 1.50 = 19 1/3 total miles.
Does this sound coorect. Even if it does could youplease explain to me if you know how to solve this in any other ways.
If this is wrong could you also please explain?
THanks <3

you are correct!!! excellent!

another way you can solve it (it might even be easier for you!) is to set it up like an equation:

possibly set it up like this: since 20 dollars is what Mrs. Sheehan has, put 20 down as your first variable then use T for tip and 18 (ur 1st step) then do the step two and end up w/ 16.50. after that, follow the steps you came up with to get the solution following. (and m standing for miles)

so your equation will look something like this:

20-t+18-m=16.50/$.90+18 and 1/3m

then your next equation, which comes up w/ your complete solution is like this:

18 1/3m+1stm equaling 1.50= 19 1/3m

i hope this helped!

yes you are right. You have $20, first get rid of the $2 for the tip. 20-2=18. Now you have $18 to work with, subtract the first mile 18-1.50=16.50. Now you only have $16.50 left to use. Divide $16.50 by the $.90 for each additional mile, 16.50/.90=18 1/3. You will then be broke but yes you did it right!!

here lets c cause i think you might have writen a few things wrong but i think they're what i think they are. i'm just going to check

$20-$2= $18
$18-$1.50= $16.50
$16.50/ $0.90= 18 1/3 miles
18 1/3+ the first mile= 19 1/3 miles

yupyup you correct! =D

Looks right to me. I suppose you could solve it by setting up a single equation: the first mile, plus the x-1 additional miles and the tip comes out to $20:
1.50 + 0.90(x - 1) + 2 = 20
Then solve this for x.

C+5=11 So C is largely what volume extra to 5= 11??? We ca see that this is 6 instantly . yet each from time to time for extra sturdy complications u settle on it like this: u subtract 5 from each aspect So on the left aspect te 5's cancel out C = 11-5 settle on and u get 6!!

You are correct!
Sorry, but that is the only way that I know how to solve it.

Your answer looks good. You can set it up algebraicly, but it amounts to about the same thing.
