The heart is the muscular pump which is responsible for circulating the blood throughout the body.

The heart is about the size of a closed fist. The adult human heart is about 5 inches long and 3.5 inches wide, weighing less than 1 pound. The importance of a healthy, well-functioning heart is obvious: to circulate life-sustaining blood throughout the body.

The heart is located in the thoracic cavity. This places the heart between the lungs, behind the sternum, in front of the thoracic vertabrae, and above the diaphragm. The heart's apex (conical tip) lies on the diaphragm and points to the left of the body. It is at the apex where the heartbeat is most easily felt and heard through the stethoscope.
