What do you think of this whole thing? I think, before we go sending 1 laptop to every child in other countries, that we should give our kids laptops first. Even in this day and age, kids in the US and Canada dont have computers in their home. As a kid myself, id like to have a computer to take from home to school. I wouldnt have nearly as much stuff to lug from class to class.

These computers are supposed to be called,

OX classmate PC, so read up on them. they sound pretty cool for the most part, and super cheap for what they are.

Thanks for your opinions!

the person with the cute kitty avatar,
you are probably right. i guess they're just expensive toys, but the idea is great, i think us people at school should get our own real notebook, like a dell like you said./

Well they're not exactly what you seem to think they are.

They're not a normal laptop at all. They don't have a hard drive and they can't run Windows or the like for an Operating System.

They are very basic "computers" and can handle word processing etc. and can access the internet. Their prime function is to provide poor children and children from impoverished places/natiions a means of increased learning potential from computer use and internet capability.

In the U.S. you are required to purchase 2 of them for $400 and then give one of them to a poor child somewhere in the world. I don't know if you have a choice of where it goes.

I think it's a great way, if you have the money, to donate the $400 price and give 2 kids a computer.

If it were me and I was financially strapped and had to spend the $400 here in the U.S., I'd opt to buy my child an inexpensive laptop from Dell, HP, or a similar company. My brother recently got a very good laptop from Dell (not a gamer PC at all) for $550 with Windows XP; 160G Hard Drive; 2G of RAM; built in Wifi; CD/DVD +/- Burner; etc. Great laptop for the money.

So, in my mind a great charitable way to give poor kids around the world a PC, but not what I'd opt to buy for my own child.

JMHO.

That is why I work 2 part time job to afford to send my kids to Catholic School. In high school they are issued a Toshiba M400 Tablet in May for the following school year. I think a notebook per kid is a great idea.

it'll catch on, it just has to succeed and be profitable for companies to do it and they'll only risk sending it to Africa for low costs, so we should support it so that all companies start doing it here
