I was wondering how many times a person has to be threatened with physical harm before going to the police to actually have a case? How detailed to the threats have to be?

Never be afraid of the police, and of whether or not you have enough evidence. Perhaps just having the cops show up at their door to investigate the threats will be enough, maybe not. But at least you're doing something about it. Too many statistics are the result of people who didn't say anything, who didn't think they had enough evidence, enough proof, or that the situation was "bad enough".

It may very well turn out that you're overly sensitive to what's going on, but it's better than finding out the hard way that they were serious. Take whatever you have, call the cops, and do everything you can to file a report. Cops are people too, and if you're honest, straight forward, and don't say anything you can't back up, they normally have the compassion to see that you're concerned and will at least talk to the person and ask them to lay off.

Once is enough for a case, more than once and you can apply for a restraining order. The police will usually just make a report but if you feel really threatened then you need to take that police report and any additional details and get a restraining order. The police report is just that, the restraining order should (is supposed to ) stop the threats all together.

Once is farrrr enough according to federal laws. Particularly if the person has threatened to kill you. The threats don't have to be extreamly detailed, but you'd need to be more specific on what they were for any of us to assess that one. But if someone is threatening you, you should be careful, and contact the police as soon as possible. By careful, I mean don't go places alone, get a gun (yay!), don't follow your normal routine....that kinda thing.
Good luck.

When you go to the police you need to show a pattern of abuse. Also, try to remember the exact quotes and write in the quotes when you fill out the police report. Don't be afraid to get the restraining order if you feel it is necessary.

After the second threat go to the police.

Once....but have some proof, like a person who hears the threat. In California, under section 422 of the Penal Code, it is a threat of immediate harm.

You CAN and should contact the police after the FIRST treat. Depending on the nature of the treat and what evidence you have, they may not be able to do more than file a report. While you are there, ask this question. They will be more helpful than we are.

The minute your life is threatened the first time is all it takes for you to tell the police that you fear that your life is in danger. If you let it slide once... you may not get lucky the second time... maybe the second time that person is out to get you. You never know.

Once. Report to the cops every time it happens to start a paper trail and to show a pattern. Be as detailed as possible. This is important when the ****** is arrested your attorney can show all the complaints you filed against him. Ultimately this will land this genius in jail for a longer period than if you did nothing.

Report it the first time and every time. Each time a report is made the more serious the law takes it.
