I have an almost 10 month old son. My period has not yet returned - which is the longest I have gone with any of my children. I have heard that a first period while breastfeeding can many times be anovulatory...just trying to get an idea as to my chances of getting pregnant.

It's true that the first period while breastfeeding may be anovulatory but it's not guaranteed. So, you definitely have a chance of becoming pregnant before your period even actually returns. If you are still breastfeeding frequently throughout the day or your son is getting breastmilk exclusively, then your chances of ovulating (and conceiving) are lower than those of someone who isn't breastfeeding at all or who is only breastfeeding a little bit each day. But, again, the chances are still there. Good luck.

I've heard of people getting pregnant a lot while they were still breastfeeding. I guess it depends on just how fertile you are. Some of us had to work a lot harder just to get there, but you may very well be pregnant. A doctor could draw some blood from you and tell right away if that human growth hormone is present again. Hope things turn out the way you would like them to because we don't always have control over these types of things.

A common belief is that you can't get pregnant while you're breastfeeding, but you can. My mother-in-law got pregnant with number 8 that way. I don't know the chances of doing so though. Stopping breastfeeding will make that easier, but you should breastfeed for at least a year if you are able to. I wasn't.

Depends on how you are breastfeeding. Many mothers don't nurse exclusively, meaning that they give their babies pacifiers to suck throughout the day, give them breastmilk by bottle, and let their babies sleep through the night without nursing after 4-6 months.

To maximize your chances of suppressing ovulation while breastfeeding the key is letting your baby nurse "on demand" throughout the day and night. Constant suckling at the breast is what stimulates your body to keep producing the hormones that make you not ovulate - and therefore not fertile.

If you breastfeed exclusively this way, you can delay ovulation for at least a year and many women find that their period doesn't return for 15-18 months.

If you are trying to find out if you are ovulating, even though you haven't had a period, watch for cervical mucus and other signs of returning fertility. There is a great book about this - the Art of Natural Family Planning.

Yes - my first son was a year old when I got pregnant with my second. I was still breast feeding and hadn't had a period yet - in fact it didn't occur to me that I was pregnant until my husband commented on my little tummy - at that point I was over three months gone. The irony is that I thought I had a period during the first month, but it was probably breakthrough bleeding (light bleeding for two days).

I had no early pregnancy symptoms with the second to give me a clue - no morning sickness, and of course breast tenderness wouldn't have been noticeable because I was still nursing!

I think your chances are pretty good...but everyone's different. I fell pregnant with my first son in the first month of trying, so apparently my husband and I are a good match conception-wise (which is good, because we were late starters!)

I fell pregnant when my daughter was 11 months old. I was exclusively breastfeeding and still hadnt had a period.
Sadly I miscarried and that made my periods return and then I fell pregnant again a couple of months later.
With my second again we used breastfeeding as a form of contraception and I didnt fall pregnant once. I breastfed her till she was 3. And my periods didnt return till she was 18 months.

They say that lactational amenorrhea (absence of your period due to breastfeeding) is a good birth control method until your child is 6 months old. We conceived our daughter when our son was 6 months 2 days old, and I was exclusively breastfeeding. I would not count on breastfeeding to prevent pregnancy.
