I read East of Eden in high school and more recently read the Grapes of Wrath, I really enjoyed both of them and would recommend either.

Yes, I highly recommend his books. As far as Im concerned he is the greatest American author of his generation. Read Mice and Men, East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath, and so on...you wont be sorry.

I've read The Pearl and Of Mice And Men. I really didn't care for either, but if you're going to read one of his books on your own time I'd go with The Pearl, only because you're less likely to encounter it in school so it would be a good way to broaden your literary horizons.

Amazingly, I was never required to read any Steinbeck in school. Nevertheless, my interest in Arthurian tales led me to the gem found in this list:

It's not complete (he died before he finished it), but it is nearly so, and the work as it stands is absolutely fantastic. He was attempting to modernize Mallory's Le Morte de Arthur, and even unfinished, he succeeded famously.
Who knew JS wrote about such interesting topics?
