A lot of people hate this book, but it was one of my favorites, especially out of the books that we have to read in school. The important thing to remember about Holden is that he is telling his story while in an institution. He had a nervous breakdown, which is areally big thing for someone in (and out of) High School. The basic idea is that all he wants to do is "be the Catcher in the Rye, saving kids from falling off of the cliff". Sound odd? The idea is that he wants to "catch" people, save them from a great fall WHERE NOBODY CAUGHT HIM. That is the most important part of the book, and it can be easy to miss if you're just annoyed by his odd rants.

That's the other part: as he moves closer towards his breakdown, he loses touch with reality and seems to become fascinated with death. He gets horribly upset at the smallest things, a psychological sign that he is headed for a FALL. The depressing thing is, not even his psychiatrist friend sees this. Only his kid sister sees what is happening.

I really liked this book, and I hope maybe now you understand it a little better.

I hate it too. It's annoying and self-indulgent and only speaks to a very select and privileged group of people. I couldn't identify with it in any way.
