Hmm, if this wasn't LGBT, I'd say someone from India. and was mistakenly used for Native Americans as early explorers had thought they had reached India.

Native Indians from the Americans were incorrectly identified as such. Americans now consider them First Americans or Native Americans.

well, it is many things ,
indian often refers to native americans because wen columbus first arrived in the "new world" he believed he was in the indonesia area and called them indians.

wen technically an indian is a citizens of india
