The denominations are $1000 and $500. I've tried calling several exchange places and airports and theyre telling me they don't accept it.Also tried Chase bank.Any suggestions are appreciated.Thanks ;)

First: There is no current 1000 Lei banknote. All current Romania banknotes are polymer plastic, and all paper banknotes have been demonetized.

Second: Nearly all currency exchanges charge a healthy commission, between $3 and $5 per transaction, on top of the not-so-great rate. If your 500 Lei note is current, you may do well selling to a collector instead.

Generally there are a couple things you need
(a) A bank where you have an established account
(b) A bank that actually does this.

If you are a stranger in NYC, maybe the Rumanian embassy can help you.

Any commercial bank should be able to exchange your money.
