For a band that sang only beach songs, they sure are heaped upon with "great" praise. After all, they were the best the American music producers could come up with to counter the British Invasion (that and unfairly ignoring Motown...this coming from a white guy who wasn't even born yet). What the hell was so special about these guys? Brian Wilson was not the great songwriter everyone makes him out to be (c'mon now, Peter Cetera was so much better). The rest of the guys were hacks. Why the adoration?

Mountain_Enchantress: Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Emo is much better than any Beach Boys song. I prefer Led Zeppelin, Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, and The Clash. Those bands are much better than any incarnation of the B(i)tch Boys. And yes, Peter Cetera is a much better songwriter than Brian (I have only two brain cells left) Wilson.

I'm not racist or anything, but Motown was kinda overrated too.

The Beach Boys are not overrated. All their songs have a very unique mood and atmosphere to them. Brian Wilson is a great songwriter. I suspect you just need to listen to more of them. Check out Pet Sounds or Smile.

One of my favorite groups. Guess you had to be there from about 1962 onward. It was still a " happier time" and most of the songs remind you of summer love and babes at the beach. It was the " California" sound and was new.

Not to mention it was brothers and cousins that made of the majority of the group which was a little different them. I like them the best because it reminds me of my youth and interest in girls up to proms and graduation etc. I like other groups at the time like Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons but also like Roy Orbison and may other single hit groups. Like music from about 1956 to 1968 in general. Then it got too Psychedelic.
( Beach Boys had that sound also)

I really identify with crooner type and young love type songs anyhow. Also like Peter Cetera. I started liking music again in the 80's because soft rock or lite rock came closest to the crooner songs I like.

They are the only band who invented a good beach song. I am 12 years old and appreciate the music from that era because music nowadays is full of blonde know it alls who wear too- tight bikini's onstage at the VMA's and blonde clutzes who go out with a new boy ever hour. Consider that.

Even the titles of their songs were seductive, not just the music. They found their niche, and knew what to do with it.
They are not overrated.

And Motown was not ignored "white guy".

You may not have been born yet then, but what is your excuse for your ignorance now?

They really are not overrated. I grew up listening to their music. It was great.

Then came The Beatles.
The song "Good Vibrations" was written so as to compete with "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "A Day In A Life" by The Beatles.

I saw them once live in concert.........
(No, I wasn't a fan, & still not.... got dragged along) - outdoor concert - Australia. Was the last of 3 concerts in my town.
They were so drunk, they only played 3 songs (badly) & then the concert was cancelled ~ the highlight of that night for me was more on a personal level ~ the person that dragged me along, fell out of a tree which he'd climbed to get a better view of the stage, was VERY funny (no, he wasnt hurt, luckily)

how can you compare peter cetera to brian wilson? obviously you are ignorant to what defines a memorable singer/songwriter. Stick with your emo music and leave what's decent alone.

Your gotta put yourself in the time. Late 60's and early 70's were so different from the 50's, and now. It's peppy music,
California music. It was about a lifestyle, unknown in the east and mid west.
