Because Bush made a purely political decision and put a person that would do as asked. Bush had him fire 8 assistant attorney generals that were democrats. Gonzales gave flimsy excuses like they weren't good prosecutors. The press checked the facts and found they were the top prosecutors, many wins against big business Bush had to blame somebody so he cut Gonzales off at the knees and under pressure He resigned. Under questioning by the senate judiciary committee he kept claiming that president Bush recused him of answering questions before that committee which Bush had no authority to do. so he was a dead man walking after that.

Bush forced him out. Bush wanted to get rid of a lot of attorney generals who were not following his line, so Gonzales was the scapegoat used to do the job, and in the subsequent uproar, Bush booted him out. Rumsfeld was the same thing; he did not quit because he wanted to, he was forced out by Bush who needed him as a scapegoat for other problems. Every time one of these people "resigns" they do not really voluntarily resign. they are fired and told to do a dog and pony show as a "resignation".

The public reports and news articles are all media hype pushing the official Administration line, which invariably is a complete lie.

Had he stayed in office and not resigned?..We could have impeached him, the President and the Vice President...Read your executive orders very thoroughly and you will know this...
