Blatty - "The Exorcist" is the scariest novel I have ever read.
Ellis - "American Psycho" may be the most disturbing novel I have ever read.
Oates - "Zombie" is disturbing like "American Psycho" but with less gore.
King - "The Stand" is pretty decent
Palahniuk - "Lullaby"
Nasaw - "The Girls He Adored" is also about a serial killer. It also gave me some bad dreams.

H.P. Lovecraft:

His short story collections are wonderful, but you might want to have a dictionary handy. You definitely will learn some intriguing words, including eldritch. If you like the Cthulhu Mythos stories, HPL had many disciples, including Clark Ashton Smith and Robert Bloch. Even Stephen King has done Mythos stories.
Graham Masterton
Among my favorites are Charnal House, The Manitou, The Sphinx, The Djinn and Walkers.
Here's a listing of others:

Clive Barker

Robert Stallman's Book of the Beast trilogy
The Orphan
The Captive
The Beast
This is unlike any other werewolf fiction you will ever read. I've reread the trilogy a number of times; it's one set I won't be trading or selling.
The Alfred Hitchcock anthologies can be found in lots of used-book stores and might be in print still. They're filled with wonderful short stories and novellas, with all the suspense and mystery anyone would want wrapped up in neat little tales.
I agree with Stephen King. My favorites are the early ones: Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, It!, The Shining, Christine, The Stand, Night Shift, Firestarter, Cujo, Pet Sematary, Skeleton Crew, Nightmares & Dreamscapes, and, if you're curious about the writing process, Danse Macabre, a non-fiction book that is fascinating.
The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
Collected Works of Edgar Allen Poe
Peter Straub has written a number of good novels, including Julia, Ghost Story, Floating Dragon, and The Talisman (with Stephen King).
Richard Matheson's novels I Am Legend and Stir of Echoes are good. The first one has been filmed twice and is being filmed again, or so I've heard. Stir of Echoes also was filmed as A Stir of Echoes. Matheson is an excellent writer.
Richard Bloch~Psycho
His short stories and novels are excellent!

Anne Rice's "Vampire" series. The first one is "Conversations with the Vampire." It tells about a vampire who starts out killing only the homeless and goes on from there. There are other books in the series.

Poppy Z Brite, "exquisite corpse" or something. Real moody, creepy, got that southern gothic new orleans feel, some of the images she puts in your mind will haunt you for weeks,
clive barker's books of blood, (yeah the same clive barker who did the Hellraiser series)

well I don't know how much you would like to read.....I could recommend you Harry Potter by J.K Rowling, but that's a lot of reading. Another book you might be interested in is The Outsiders by S.E Hinton

Anything by H. P. Lovecraft.
If you can get past the flowery language, his stuff is pretty good.
And then of course there's Poe...
