one thing is the Empire grew to large to support itself. there was so many people living in its cities than its agriculture could support. with the Sahara expanding they began to depend too much on trade to supply its need. if trade collapsed then the Ghanian's would starve.
the second thing was the desire by the Almovarids to control the Sahara trade. they made war with the Ghanian's to help solidify their control on the trade route. they would eventual win the war after about a decade, and make Ghana apart of their empire. this would lead to them converting most Ghanian's to Islam, and establishing it as a part of a Berber empire,
