It's just become a generic term, I suppose, like we Brits ask for the loos, the Gents/Ladies , even the public conveniences, not to mention the toilets.

The American ladies may ask for the bathroom, but the guys usually ask for the JOHN or the CAN depending on whether it is a standing or sitting toilet use.

A good question, and probably something to do with the history of Puritanism in America. Think how many American movies permit extreme violence at low ratings, but as soon as sex or nudity are involved the rating become R or worse, NC-17 (the US equivalent of an 18 cert, which is not much of a problem for the rest of the world but essentially box office death in the States.)

I'm not talking about all Americans, but about American codes of practice and culture. It's not a majority American thing to say 'I want to take a s***' or 'I need to pee'. For whatever historical reason, perhaps related to what I've suggested above, most Americans (at least in my experience) prefer euphemisms when it comes to normal bodily functions like urination and defecation and sex, but seem to be OK with violence. Make of it what you will.

I ask for the restroom when I am out shopping and need to use one. Well what do you call it? If your British a loo makes no sense to me at all. I need the loo....sounds like a train. A bog??? A bog is a wetland type that accumulates acidic peat not a restroom. So you see........Americans aren't the only ones who use unusual terminology.

You've just misdefined "bathroom." A word to the wise: until you've mastered basic English, keep a dictionary at hand.
