In the English speaking world it means a polygonous household as well as an area in the house in which no man may enter. It has a negative connotation in the Western World but it is different for those living in the Middle East. The word 'harem' derives from the three consonants h-r-m which usually connote a meaning of 'forbidden' or 'kept safe' in Arabic. Usually a harem would consist of many women not all of which were wives. Female servants would live in the harem along with other female family members and eunuchs. Some young men lived in harems up until the age of 16 such as sons of a caliph. This is in contrast with the Western's views of them being more like brothels which they weren't meant to be.

It is something modern western men are having wet dreams about... and they are daydreams at that... pretty pathetic business... don't you agree?
It takes a very rich and powerful in many ways man to be able to support and keep in line many women: wives, concubines and such... He also has to provide financial support for a lifetime for all of the children born in harem from all the sexual relationships he is enjoying . Solomon had quite the large harem...he had something like 300 wives and 700 concubines, or was it the other way around?
Imagine trying to keep 1000 women happy!

I believe it is a group of wives or concubines but I do not know the exact definition.
