If you just want to play root notes and stuff, bass is a piece of cake if you already know how to play guitar. If you really want to work it, to make it add to the rythum and feel of the song, it's a bit different than playing guitrar, and takes some special training.
A good bass player can add as much to the song as a good lead guitarist or lead singer. You just don't notice it because it's not out in front of the song.
Also, if you play the bass you need some kind of amp, increasing the cost, whereas with acoustic guitar you don't, unless you play an acoustic bass. But very few songs use an acoustic bass. Most use electric Bass. You can use an acoustic bass for any song you want but it has a different sound than electric bass, although they have the same pitch range.

The Bass strings are the same as the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th strings of the acoustic guitar except that they are tuned one octave lower.
The guitar usually plays chords and lead solo where the bass will usually single notes using the Root and Fifth of the chord and where applicable other notes within the chord.
The Bass strings are much thicker and you will have to work harder to develop substantial finger callouses in order to reduce the pain of playing which you should already know about if you are learning acoustic guitar.
Playing the Bass can be easier but to become a good Bassist you will have to learn about music so you can dance around the chords and become more improvisational.
Studying music theory will help you become a professional musician and facilitate easier transition to other instruments as well.
Good Luck!

well firstly the strings are different
acoustic- 6
bass- 4

and bass is harder then acoustic
i think that you should stick with acoustic and learn like the basis for playing
and then as you get more experienced you can try the bass and see if you like it
