The store/ general manager does EVERYTHING in the store.
Hiring, inventory, money management, scheduling, delegating responsiblity to your team members, holding your team responsible for their actions (rewards and conseqences), inspiring your team, transmitting paperwork and sales figures to your corperate office, making sure you sales figures are up to the standards of your corperate office, making sure all policies and procedures laid out by the company are followed and enforced. Most importantly: You are PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for anything that gets screwed up! If you arent there, and you get a loss prevention audit and your team gets sited for doing something stupid... Guess who gets in trouble!? yeah.. they do, but guess who corperate office is gonna yell at!??! Thats right!!
How much money you make depends on the kind of store, the amount of business your store does, and the part of the country you're in.

Depends on which chain you manage a store for. For example, generally, the general manager is responsible for managing inventory; at Wal-Mart, however, this responsibility is delegated to section managers -- each section manager does his or her own ordering. In all cases, however, the general manager is responsible for hiring and firing employees, overseeing changes to store format, and dealing with local issues (land zoning, permitting, assessing and reporting local taxes, etc.)
General managers are generally well compensated. It is not uncommon for a general manager of a large store (with $10 million or more in annual sales) to make in excess of $100,000 a year.
