I have an 1986 VW Golf with a 5 speed stick and140,000 miles on it. I got in the car started it just fine, drove about 20ft, and then as I was leaving my drive way I went a little too slow for first gear (not that slow) the car lurched 3 times and died. I then tried to start it nothing happened, no click no sounds nothing. I was on a hill so I pushed it a little and bump started it just fine. I then drove the car to the supermarket (car ran great). When I tried to leave my car wouldn't start again, no sound no nothing. I tried to bump start it and nothing hapened so I had my friend come with jumper cables. With the jumps the car would start fine and run fine but as soon as we took off the jumpers the car would rev up and down really rough for a few seconds and then die. We tried three times and gave up. Anybody know the problem.

Most likely problem is simply a bad battery or bad connections to the battery

Get battery replaced/inspected/tested.

I would also get the alternator tested asap. Once you jumped the car, the alternator should keep the car running. It's possible that you've got a bad alternator/voltage regulator that caused your original battery to go bad.

It should run even if the battery is dead, the alternator powers it. Could be the Alternator is KAPOOT and wouldn't charge the battery, OR any one of a hundred different problems. If you can't work on it yourself, your best bet is to have it towed to a repair palce.
