Most american foods are from dishes brought over to america from the first immigrants. The hamburger for example came from a meat patty that was made in Hamburg and Americans put it in a bun.French-fried potatoes were likely invented during the 18th century in the area that later became Belgium. The name "French" was applied to them in (American) English at the beginning of the 19th century.
Claims of "invention" of the hot dog are difficult to assess, because different stories assert the creation of the sausage itself, the placing of the sausage (or another kind of sausage) on bread or a bun as finger food, the mass popularization of the existing dish, or the application of the name "hot dog" to a sausage and bun combination.

The city of Vienna traces the lineage of the hot dog to the wienerwurst or Viennese sausage, the city of Frankfurt to the frankfurter wurst, which it claims was invented in the 1480s; the hot dog has also been attributed to Johann Georghehner, a 17th century butcher from the Bavarian city of Coburg who is said to have invented the "dachshund" or "little-dog" sausage and brought it to Frankfurt.[1]

Around 1870 on Coney Island, a German immigrant named Charles Feltman began selling sausages in rolls.[2][3
Italian immigrants brought pizza to the United States, in the early 1900s. However, it was the 1950s when pizza caught on outside the Italian-American community, and quickly spread throughout the U.S. and became an international food, now found in every country.
So the true american food is that prepared by the native americans such as corn bread.

pemmican and frybread

america has no foods to call its own modern america stole all the foods it has from other countries. the only foods i can think of that truly native to the USA are fods that were here before colombus came over and raped the native americans into submission. two foods the natives ate were pemmican and frybread

pemmican is venison jerky with dried berries in it and frybread was tradionaly a cornmeal dough fried in oil.
they also ate a lot of fish

if your talking about all of america (that includes mexico and canada) then a lot of mexican foods are truly american foods because the aztecs had an extensive diet made up moslty of corn based dishes.a dn in canada the inuets and other eskimo tribes ate lots of seal, fish, and polar bear.

Corn is one. It was introduced to the Europeans by the Native Americans.

Also, I believe barbeque was invented in the United States.
