What is the purpose of making someone a "contact" and what is the advantage?

You can get their question mailed to you or at your yahoo answers account. You can monitor their answers, and whenever you ask a question it goes to them.

Like yourself I am uncertain as to what a contact means. Have been added to many peoples contact list but have not responded or written to any of them, nor have they corresponded with me. So what this is for is far beyond me.
