Not all books portray vampires as beautiful. Some show that they can APPEAR beautiful but, in fact, are monsters. Read Salem's Lot by Stephen King, and you will see what I mean. In other books they are romanticized, because they use the character as the classic tormented hero/heroine character. Therefore, the vampire is both dark and mysterious and the heroine is drawn to him to help him & bring love to him.

You should read the original vampire story...Dracula by Bram Stoker. There's also Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire (or others of her Vampire Chronicles). Linda Lael Miller wrote the Valerian Vampire series (Forever and the Night; For All Eternity; Time Without End; Tonight and Always) and Susan Krinard also has a series of books about vampires like Chasing Midnight and Prince of Dreams and others. There's also a Regency romance called The Vampire Viscount by Karen Harbaugh that is quite good.

Try- Peeps and The Last Days by Scott Westerfeld. They are an interesting take on vampirism. Peeps is the first of the two books.

Try the cirque Du freak series. The first book's not entirely about vampires, but the rest basically are. Amazing books. the author is Darren Shan. If you want something darker, try his other series, the Demonata, which is (predictably) about demons. Both are great series and very well-written.

Since this hasn't been mentioned try Amelia Atwater-Rohdes she has some dark Vampire novels. The Vampires in her novels aren't necessarily good.

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris is the first of her books in a series of 7 or so, I think.
It's totally worth reading!
