Arbitrator Peter Seitz rendered the Messersmith-McNally decision on 23-December-1975. MLBPA chief Marvin Miller signed assent on the document, the MLB representative signed dissent, and promptly handed Seitz his walking papers -- he was immediately fired as MLB's independent arbiter.

Free agency has gone through a few different iterations since then, but that was where it started. And baseball has been for the better ever since.

it all started when back when in a galaxy far far away....when there were too many players who thought they could play in the mlb, so they just sit there. Its also a place where players go when they are released when they can be signed by anyone
