I'm going to do this a very uncommon way. Follow along carefully.

Okay, so you have your two equations. Multiply the second equation by 2, and move 5y on the first equation to the other side. You have:

2x - 5y = 0
2x + 2y = 2

Now, subtract the two *equations*.

-7y = -2

Divide both sides by -7.

y = 2/7

Plug that in to one of the equations.

x + 2/7 = 1

Get x alone.

x = 5/7

So, your answers are:

x = 5/7
y = 2/7

You can check these if you would like.

Simultaneous equations in 2 unknowns:
