Honestly, it is hard to know sometimes. Just like when the elderly get ripped off of construction workers who leave a job unfinished or say you opened up an e-mail and the offer looks SOOOO good that you go ahead and sign up but never get anything for your trouble or (god forbid) money you may shell out, then you know you got ripped off. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true,it most likely is. And, if it takes someone threatening you or getting in your face or making desperate statements like: "Only today, are we having this super duper special" type language, run the other way! Just follow your gut instincts and most likely your common sense will give you what's called a "fore-boding" or "a little birdie's telling me not to do this" type of feeling and you should be ok. Oh, and you can always tell them, "well, I always like to check out anyone I deal with through the Better Business Bureau first and if your listed in good standing with them, I may get back to you." That always scares thieves off! I've actually used it a couple of times. Oh and another thing you can do, if you have solicitors at your doorstep, ask for a solicitor's permit from the county you live in. If they're on the up-and-up they will have this clearance card, paper, whatever, with them. If not, do NOT give them money! Hope this helped.

Depends on the situatuion....
One way of knowing is when a person is doing way too much fast talking when trying to sell a product, being too pushy, or when you ask questions of them they may try giving you the run around saying the same things that they just said minutes before...but just not in the same exact words. Always make sure you listen to everything a person is telling you.

Another way of knowing that your being ripped off is if someone places a pen into your hand and tells you to sign a contract without giving you the time to read over the contract and think things over or ask questions about it.
