I'm not sure exactly what you mean by violin rock band. The Dave Matthews Band has a some great violin based songs. I'm not so sure about who else. Check out Arcade Fire as well.

The Flock. Jean Luc Ponty. Probably before your time though - The Flock were around in the late 60's and early 70's.

They used to have a girl play violins, but she got very very sick for being on tour with the band so she had to leave. But they are still amazing and you should still check them out.
