Is it only Americans who are so keen on using nukes. Do they not realise that if they do they will really destroy themselves.
Do they not realise that certain countries are spoiling to have a go from Russia to China Korea
Do they not realise that a bomber wil always get through in spite of sealed borders.
The sentiment is that of the school bully who thinks no one can hit back

After looking at the previous answers I would say there is a combination of things that could have stopped the Iraq war. One thing for sure is; Bush didn't alter any information, he simply passed along the information that he was given, the tune about him lying should not be considered an answer. If Bush lied Ahmadinejad is telling the truth! So, playing the blame game answer does not work. Even if Bill Maheer says so.

The war could have been prevented if Bush did not pursue it, however, having our planes shot at for the previous 10 years by Saddam's military speaks volumes to the nay sayers of why we should or should not have attacked Iraq.

One thing is for sure and won't change for awhile; insurgents represent the terrorist in the world and the USA has not been attacked since 9/11

Iraq should never have been attacked, instead this is what should have happened. Immediately after 9/11:

1. Lock up the US borders
2. Make entry into the US so difficult that you would need to be a saint to gain enterance.
3. Warn anyone that if hit again, they get nuked - no questions asked.
4. Tell Afghanistan to give up Bin Laden and if they don't then forces will enter to destroy the Taliban.
5. Tell Pakistan to give up Bin Laden or they severe economic ties with the United States for the rest of their natural lives.
6. Put a price on Bin Ladens head so high that would it make Bill Gates get a rifle and go searching.
7. Tell the UN to help in the search for Bin Laden or the US will never help them out in any situation in the future.

Taliban defeated, Iraq stable as much as it could be with Saddam in power and America holding the card that a nuclear missile will be struck upon any country that strikes them.

IT is a long fight. Alot of bad blood. Conflict was in my opinion the only way to shake up a nation and help contain the rest before they come back at US. Saddam had to go. Had Bin Laden been removed by Dad Bush and Clinton we may have had a chance at diplomacy. Gulf War did not work and we were not prepared for 9/11.
So, perhaps nothing. Thank you.

*NYSun Cowards & Heroes 4,000 killed in peacetime /military abroad 4 of the 8 yrs of Clinton's administration. But who is counting those numbers?

In 2002 I went on record publicly that we should blockade Iraq to prevent Iraq from exporting any oil at all, and that we should not permit the "oil for food" program to continue because that program was subject to abuse.

The reason is that without the money from oil it was impossible for Saddam Hussein to buy weapons on the black market that would be of any danger to us or any of the neighboring countries.
.

My position is the same today as it was then. Any oil producing nation that is a military threat to the United States or any other nation should be blockaded to prevent it from exporting oil.

Without the revenues from oil, these nations will lack the funds to buy weapons that can be used to threaten another country.

The only way that these countries can be a threat militarily is if they have the funds to buy the necessary military weapons on the open and black markets.

Without the revenues from oil, they lack sufficient funds to buy sufficient military weapons to be a threat to their neighbors.

Fortunately countries such as Iran lack the sophistication to develop weapons that are really a threat.

The Iranian built jets that Ahmadinejad was showing off the other day are little more than target practice for American jets.

I know my critics and the trolls who annoy me from time to time will say that this idea is crazy because it will make the price of oil to go up, and do I want $10 per gallon gasoline.

Compared with the damage that countries like Iran can do if they can get their hands on sufficient military weapons to be a threat to their neighbors, $10 per gallon gasoline, even $100 per gallon gasoline is a small price to pay compared to the death and destruction countries like Iran can cause if they can buy sufficient military weapons on the open and black markets.

Member of the Bush 2000 campaign staff, Katherine Harris not wrongfully and illegally barring over 55,000 eligible Florida voters from voting in the 2000 elections. I think Gore as president would have prevented us from going into Iraq.

The question assumes it should have been stopped. We did the right thing and history will show this to be a briliant move by "big picture" thinker George W. Bush.

For those who think that Bush is the only problem in the world, your depth of analysis and understanding is truly pathetic!

We didn't need to invade Iraq. We had the no fly zone, and our planes were enforcing it. I still believe that Bush invaded Iraq in revenge for Saddam saying that he was going to assassinate Bush Sr. over the Kuwait war.

If Al Gore was lawfully elected in 2001 instead of George Bush, then the war will not likely happen.
