I would tell them about the awesome salad bar the restaurant has and make low fat suggestions. It's not being rude at all, but I think you can show some tact. If the restaurant doesn't have a salad bar, suggest one of the salads on the menu by simply stating So and So has great Garden salad and their house salad is ridiculously guilt free delicious.

I am on a diet and I have lost a great deal of weight... but I don't let the proud diet pride get in the way of helping my overweight but friendly friends.

If I were fat and someone offered me a salad, I would tell them off. But you can talk to your friend about eating more vegetables another time. If you order some healthy foods your friend might do the same too.

If I were fat and one of my friends took me out too eat and recommended a salad, I would probably take it as an insult.

if you went out with your skinny friend, would you offer them a fattening meal or would you mind your manners and your business and let them order for themselves? you need an etiquette book so you can learn how not to be so rude. People are overweight for many reasons and overeating is not always the cause.

Why offer your friend a salad?

Because you think they don't know that they are fat, or because you think they are too stupid to realize that there are choices on the menu?

Unless they ask your advice, let them make their own choices.

They know they are overweight, they don't need you to tell them. When you go out to eat with them, they can order whatever they want. If you are trying to think of ways to be a good friend, tell them you were thinking about signing up at the gym and were wondering if they want to join you...there is no need to embarass them. Try being supportive.

It would be rude. The only time I share a dish with a friend is if we're broke, otherwise, the friend would take it as an insult. I don't need that hassle.

Rude.

that is not cruel and unusual. That is cruelly unusual. I've got a chubby friend, and I'm certain he'd slap me if I told him to get a salad. I'd just lay off.

I let them get what they want. Being fat is their own business, not mine. And their choice.
Long as they dont order the whole menu and then expect me to foot the bill.
