We just found out that the heat exchanger on our hot air oil furnace is cracked, and that the only solution is to replace it. But of course my husband is too stubborn to replace it, and wants to run it til it dies completely. How can I make him understand that this is dangerous for us and our unborn baby? A very generous family member has even proposed giving us the money for the furnace, but this still will not change his mind. Why are men so darn stubborn!?

Your local utility company will inspect it for free. I had to have my old gas stove declared a "hazard" in order to convince my landlord it was necessary to fix it. He'll be mad that you went that far, but some men are too stubborn to listen.

It's one thing to live with a crappy fridge until it dies, and quite another to live with a potential hazard like a faulty furnace.

One way to go about convincing him to replace the furnace is to stay somewhere else until it is fixed (only a last resort option though, as to not stress your relationship beyond what it already endures). You could even get medical backing if you were to get a "doctors note". Aside from actually being unhealthy for you and the baby, your mental health can affect greatly the affect of the baby. If your husband wants to have a healthy baby and happy wife he will have no choice but to change the furnace. Just keep reminding him that your lungs are the babies lungs and your stress is the babies stress, and your fear of the unhealthy furnace is stressing you and the baby out.
p.s. men are stubborn because they can be, the same as when women are stubborn. But that's why compromise was invented and in your case. . . it's two to one;-) . . . so get that furnace fixed. and if he still refuses, go above his head. Take the financial help from your family and find someone else to fix it!

I had exactly the same dilemma... I am 13 weeks too and really wanted to know the sex of my baby at my 20 week scan but my husband wanted it it to be a suprise! I have given it alot of thought over the last few weeks and I have decided to give in and wait, it's only another 6 months and i'm just so excited and happy to be pregnant. I also now think that waiting and finding out on the big day will be the most exciting way to find out the baby's sex and the bonding experience will be amazing for everyone... I really do not think that you can know the baby's sex without spoiling it for your husband, it is bound to come out by accident at some point. Whatever you decide, all the best for a great pregnancy and a gorgeous healthy baby.

Wait until your husband is out of the house and then let the family member replace it. Honestly, guys are just stubborn because they don't usually like having to admit they need help. It's better to replace it now than to wait until the middle of winter when it goes out and you're all freezing. Plus anything like that is a fire hazard when it's not working right.

I second JenMommy. Pack a bag and move in with someone else until it is repaired. I have a Dad who is just as stubborn. Unlike my Mom, I give him a deadline and then call someone. Ticks him off but since he won't maintain things (waits until something is broken), there is no other way to deal with it.

Poor combustion can cause breathing problems in you, subsequently reducing the oxygen. Best to get it fixed before heating season, because I can tell you from experience it is much more uncomfortable to fix it when it's below freezing. Ask me how I know!

Tell him if he wants to lose everything in a house fire he better replace it,get a furnace man out there to evaluate it and give him the down low,and the reason they are so stubborn is their pride.

Pack a bag and move in with the relative until he agrees to replace it. That ought to work, lol. Men are dorks.

Get a carbon monoxide monitor quickly!
When it keeps going off, he may get the point.

either you get out of the house to teach him a lesson, or take the money and change it yourself

Go live with your parents until he repairs it.
If he does not, prepare yourself to lose him in an explosion/fire or by carbon monoxide.
