Multiply a and 8
Multiply a and 1

The a just gets copied along.

The answer is a

a

8*a evaluates to 8a

8*a+4 evaluates to 8a+4

Multiply a and 9

Multiply a and 1

The a just gets copied along.

The answer is a

a

9*a evaluates to 9a

9*a-2 evaluates to 9a-2

To subtract the polynomials 8a+4 and 9a-2 we try to subtract terms in one polynomialwith any like terms in the other polynomial.

Be very careful with the "-" sign in front of 9a-2 it is to be used on all terms in it.

8a - 9a = -a

4 - -2 = 6

The answer is -a+6

(8*a+4)-(9*a-2) evaluates to -a+6

Multiply a and 3

Multiply a and 1

The a just gets copied along.

The answer is a

a

3*a evaluates to 3a

Multiply a and 4

Multiply a and 1

The a just gets copied along.

The answer is a

a

4*a evaluates to 4a

Multiply b and 4a

Multiply the b and a

Multiply b and a

The b just gets copied along.

The a just gets copied along.

The answer is ba

ba

4*a*b evaluates to 4ba

3*a-4*a*b evaluates to 3a-4ba

The answer is 3a-4ba-2

3*a-4*a*b-2 evaluates to 3a-4ba-2

To add the polynomials -a+6 and 3a-4ba-2 we try to add or combine terms in one polynomialwith any like terms in the other polynomial.

-a + 3a = 2a

6 + -2 = 4

The answer is 2a+4-4ba

(8*a+4)-(9*a-2)+(3*a-4*a*b-2) evaluates to 2a+4-4ba

Multiply a and 4

Multiply a and 1

The a just gets copied along.

The answer is a

a

4*a evaluates to 4a

2a - 4a = -2a

The answer is -2a+4-4ba

(8*a+4)-(9*a-2)+(3*a-4*a*b-2)-4*a evaluates to -2a+4-4ba

you did say step by step :p

hope this helpz :D

(8a + 4) - (9a -2) + (3a - 4ab - 2) - 4a
1) disregard the brackets but keep in mind -(9a-2) means -9a- -2 which is -9a+2
8a +4 - 9a +2 + 3a - 4ab - 2 - 4a
2) put like terms together:
(8a - 9a + 3a - 4a) + (4 + 2 - 2)-4ab
-2a + 4 - 4ab
3) Common mistakes are:
- you do not extend the negative sign to all terms within brackets i.e -(9a-2) IS NOT -9a-2 BUT -9a + 2
-A product of unknown terms cannot be associated with either single terms i.e -4ab is not like -4a

= (4a^3 – 2a^2 – 3a) – (a^3 + 5a^2 + 9a) = 4a^3 – 2a^2 – 3a – a^3 – 5a^2 – 9a = 3a^3 – 7a^2 – 12a ————> closest answer is (a) = a(3a^2 – 7a – 12) ... answer: not one of the above.

(8a+4) - (9a-2) + (3a-4ab-2) - 4a --->distribute now
8a+4-9a+2+3a-4ab-2-4a --->combine like terms next
-2a+4-4ab --->that's the answer!

(8a + 4) - (9a -2) + (3a - 4ab - 2) - 4a
=8a + 4- 9a +2 + 3a - 4ab - 2 - 4a
=8a - 9a + 3a - 4a- 4ab + 4+2 - 2
=-2a-4ab+4

2007-09-24 10:51:17 · answer #6 · answered by Hang 3 · 0 3

(8a+4) + -(9a-2) + (3a-4ab-2) -4a

distribute the "-"
8a + 4 - 9a + 2 + 3a - 4ab - 2 - 4a

combine a's...
8a - 9a + 3a - 4a = -2a

combine numbers
4+2-2=4

so....
-2a -4ab+4

(8a + 4) - (9a -2) + (3a - 4ab - 2) - 4a
=8a+4-9a+2+3a-4ab-2-4a
= -2a +4-4ab
= -2(a-2+2ab)
