You don't need to press Alt or Ctrl, just the PRINT SCREEN key.
Then go to whichever photo editing software you have and click NEW, then paste.
In PhotoShop for instance, you click FILE, then NEW, then IMAGE FROM CLIPBOARD.

why not just capture the whole screen then you can edit it however you want in just about any photo editing software.
For instance, with windows xp
Just press the Print Screen button
then open up MS Paint, which comes with windows xp, and go to edit and select paste. Then you can edit the photo by cutting out the part you want
With paint all you have to do is
Select the box icon on the left menu
Then drag the box around the part of the picture you want
then right click the section and select "copy to" and save the photo to wherever you want
It will be a bitmap image, but can easily convert it to whatever format.
With paint
just load the image, then select 'save as" from the file menu and when you go to save it you will have a drop down menu to select from for the format you wish to save it as.

If you don't want to use the print screen button to take screen captures, you can use commercial software to do so.
The company I work for sells a program called Solid Capture, which allows you to easily take screen captures of all or part of your monitor. You can learn about it at http://www.soliddocuments.com/products.htm?product=SolidCapture

Hold ALT and then press Print Screen.
That should take a screenshot of just the active window you are using.
