If an NHL player plays the majority of his career with one team but ends up playing like 2 or 3 seasons for another team. if his original team retires his number do the other teams he played for also have too retire his number? or is it simply each teams descion?

Each team makes their own decision as to whether or not to retire a number.

For example, Messier's #11 is retired in Edmonton and New York...........but not Vancouver

Patrick Roy's #33 is retired in Denver, but not in Montreal

it's each team's decision. so a player like peter bondra whose in exactly that situation will probably only have his jersey retired by the team he played most of his games for which would be the caps for him.
