Are they thinking of bicycle helmets? All the Moto-Gp guys would certainly be dead.

I didn't say this. Someone mentioned it in the why wear a helmet question. Look at snoops answer. He's saying at 16 MPH your dead.

This is all fiction and heresay.

Fact is.....A Motorcycle Helmet is tested by slamming it into a steel Anvil at speeds of 7 - 15 mph (amongst other tests). This is a Perpendicular impact onto a very tough surface.

Most bike accidents involve an angular impact, i.e. sliding down a road, helmet impacts at 20 - 45 degrees. The most common perpendicular impact in an accident is a car. Cars crumple and absorb a lot of the impact, which the Steel Anvil wouldnt.

To conclude, a 7 - 15mph impact perpendicular onto a Steel Anvil equates to roughly 65 - 75mph impact in a common accident.

Maybe you heard the 15mph from the test.

P.S. Dropping a helmet from the seat of your bike does enough damage to the soft foam to render it dangerous. A helmet must be replaced after any impact.

It is not that helmets are only good for impacts of 15 mph, it's that they must pass an impact test of at least 13 mph to receive a DOT (Department Of Transportation) sticker. Any helmet not having this sticker and used on public highways is considered by law enforcement the same as no helmet at all. This is also not to say that every helmet manufacturer only shoots for the minimum. Something you may want to research when choosing a helmet.
As one answer pointed to don't think a helmet is your path to immortality on a bike. I've personally seen someone go down in excess of 70 mph and get up to no more than the need to shop for new leathers and a tube of Deep Heat while not wearing a helmet. And have heard of someone receiving head trauma at an estimated speed of less the 25 mph with a helmet.

If the helmets where only good to 15 mph then why are motorcycle racers walking away from accidents without any head injuries? 15 mph sounds like some kind of urban legend to me.

No you fool.

Once you crash a helmet, at any speed, the helmet is scrap.

The idea of a modern helmet is to be crashed once, save the riders head from been mush, then go in the bin.

Simple as that.

Crash + head on deck = helmet in bin.

If you want to use the helmet again, then be guest. Ill just phone the undertaker.

Some people think that, but if a helmet breaks, doesn't mean it didn't help. If a helmet hits the ground at about any speed, visible damage or not, it needs to be replaced. Maybe that is where this 15MPH statistic is coming from?

Being a road racer for many years I have had my share of offs needless to say without a helmet I wouldn't be here now. Anyone that rides a bike should wear a helmet, don't believe me! visit your local rehab center. I came off at speeds ranging from 60- 140mph

Ask Shinya Nakano how his Arai held up when his rear tire delaminated at 180mph during a race.

(Hint: he broke his wrist and had quite a few bruises, but was able to WALK away from the crash)

His helmet was scratched all over, but not broken, and definitely saved his nugget! Bottom line is that helmets work. They are not a magic force field that protects your entire body from 100mph impacts, but side-curtain airbags won't protect you if you are dumb enough to drive your car off a cliff, either.

if you read the print on the tag inside the helmet, you will find it is only good for 35 mph. but as many have said once it hits the ground at any speed, even a drop it should be replaced.

I have no idea. I heard, maybe incorrectly, they were tested at 13.

Aside from that, while my head my be ok after a sudden stop fom 65 mph, what about the rest of me?
