They are not pioneer, but Gore Vidal wrote some great Historical Fiction novels and many are well worth reading.

Maybe you could try reading a couple of books by the Native American Sherman Alexie...he's apparently from a West Coast tribe so don't expect dancing with wolves-- expect being the wolf. lol-- Suggest a book of short stories called "The Toughest Indian in the World." Then "Reservation Blues," if you feel like a little touch of more 'unreal.' Okay!

The Warlords Chronicles trilogy is notably stable. It retells the Arthurian legend in a historic putting. the author has an extremely stable way of incorporating the entire topic of magic into the e book on an identical time as nonetheless conserving this is gritty, sensible tone. superb of all, Sir Lancelot is a villain. A track of Ice and hearth series is notably stable too. on an identical time as this is desperate in a mythical realm, i might say that the books have extra of a historic action/ journey/ secret/ political intrigue sense. a great style of back stabbing, twists and turns, surprises, and significant characters being killed off in the main painful procedures.
