The queen is a useless, powerless relic, but she still serves as a symbol and figurehead, plus it would really be more trouble than it would be worth to get rid of the monarchy and establish a new regime.

Because the majority are happy with her as she is a unifying symbol above party politics . I much prefer a monarch than a grey chattering politician every five years . We are a free country thank you very much I'm sorry for the United States with its two party system which has never had a woman as leader at least are monarch is a lady and we had a female prime minister . I think you should take a look at your own country a bit more mind you it is only a baby in comparison

They do have a free country. They are a constitutional monarchy. The Queen has almost no power whatsoever. The English have actually been the leaders of human rights in this world (granted mostly in the past 150 years, and Ireland certainly throws a monkey wrench in that problem, but thats a centuries old conflict)

A monarch is a government person who doesn't have to run for re-election every couple of years, so they can tell the truth as it really is, without worrying about their image or what the newspapers and TV will say about them.
American presidents are slaves of the New York Times and PBS, and legislators are slaves of lobbyists as well as the news/entertainment media.

I wish WE had a Queen like Her Majesty!

Hey - I'm American here. Maybe they have the right idea and we're in the wrong. First, her position is completely ceremonial. They have the Parliament that makes and upholds laws - just like our senate and congress.
If we had the equivalent here in the USA we would have a basis for class, culture and moral direction. Instead our "ROYALS" are going to rehab, crashing cars and unable to parent the children they squeeze out! Get an education and form an educated opinion.
And to the Brits - I am sorry for my statesman's ignorance!

The Queen- indeed the Royal Family has no real authority, the position is purely ceremonial and a part of the British culture.

They essentially do have a free country - their Parliment is the equivalent of our Congress.

We feel sorry for you, with something like Bush. We like things just the way they are, thank you.

Too frightened.
The armed forces and police have to swear personal loyalty to the monarch like the germans had to do with Hitler.
To oppose the monarchy is treason
