An episode of Mythbusters on Discovery channel look at this idea and found that you can't jump high enough or fast enough to make a difference. Besides, how could you time your jump? Even if you could, you would be killed just milliseconds later than if you didn't jump at all.

depends on how far the elevator falls first of all, but if it is from more than 50 feet or so then ,
NO WAY, you are sharing the acceleration and velocity with the elevator, basically you are falling relative to it. So when you jump off, it may slow you down a little because of wind resistence, drag, etc , but since you are jumping off at the last second there is not enough time for these changes to even make a difference.

Sure. For another fraction of a second. Then the top of the elevator caves in and crushes you. Just like it would have if you didn't jump.

like me---it sound like you have either watched too much television or listed to too many myths.

since you cannot determine when that is (right before you hit ground)...i would venture to say NO...it is not true.

HOWEVER..that being said..i have heard news reports of persons who have survived an elevator drop (without jumping)...so i guess you may be able to survive it..i would say it is a crap shoot .

good luck :)
