It depends on who you ask, and in what context.

There's a whole field of Geography that is perception/linguistically based. The researchers go out and ask people where they think a place is located. They also ask locals, or look through phone books at business names to get a sense of "self-perception." In the case of Oklahoma, I've always percieved it as a "western" (read: cowboy) state, even though I've lived in Kansas and Missouri a good portion of my life.

Another way of dividing regions is based on culture. A good example of this is Latin America. When I was in elementary school, I always learned that Mexico is part of North America. As I learned about it from a cultural perspective, it's definately more Latin America. Using this, with its agriculture and ranching, it's more Great Plains/Midwest.

A final way would be to look at the Geomorphology, the underlying physical characteristics of the earth. This division would put the extreme southeastern part of teh state in the Atlantic-Gulf Coastal Plain, the East Central portion in the Ouachita (pronounced "wachita") mountains, Northeastern in the Ozark Mountains, Central as part of the Central Lowlands, and the Panhandle with the Great Plains.

Ask a Oklahoman, and they'll tell you either South or West.
