I've been thinking about taking birth control, not for sexual purposes, but just to have less periods. Is it really worth it?

Birth control is overall a good thing. Aside from shortening your period and making it lighter, it can protect you from certain conditions including ovarian, uterine, and endometrial cancers, as well as ovarian cysts and fibroids.

If you're experiencing heavy, irregular or painful periods, then the pill is definitely one option you should explore with your doctor.

There is absolutely no reason why, if it works for you, you shouldn't do it.

I have to take continuous BC for medical purposes and have 3 periods a year. Besides gaining 12 pounds (which I do take seriously and have been trying really hard to get off with only marginal results - so something to consider) - I've had no other side effects.

Also, if you consider that when pregnant and for most women - during nursing you would not have a period. This might mean that you wouldn't have a period for maybe 1.5 - 2 years at a stretch. Because we now choose to not have kids, or have a limited number of children, we have nearly many more menstrual cycles than women did say 20 - 50 years ago.

EDIT: Heres a snippit of an article about it, link below:

"She points out women on hormonal contraception don't have real periods anyway, just withdrawal bleeding during the break from the hormone progestin.

According to Miller, modern women endure up to nine times more periods than their great-grandmothers, who began menstruating later, married young and naturally suppressed periods for years while they were pregnant or breast-feeding. Today's women may have about 450 periods."

The only type of birth control that gives you less periods is the shot and i have heard it really messes with your cycle. other forms like the pill or the patch help regulate your cycle if that is what you are looking for it is a good idea

YES! I use Nuvaring constantly. My doc recommends it because it is consistent hormones, not spiking once a day if you take an oral pill. I change it out every 3 weeks and have not messed with that nasty bleeding crap for years!! It's fantastic.

Don't do that, unless you have really bad periods. There's something not right about taking a bunch of hormones just to have fewer periods.

It's not really good for your hormones and your whole body altogether. That's the way you were made or I should say we, women. It's a blessing to have your cycle and be able to concieve! May God bless you...
